Mood Glove Enhancing mood in film music through haptic sensations for an enriched film experience

PhDThis research explores a new way of enhancing audience experience in film entertainment, presenting the design and implementation of a wearable prototype system that uses haptic sensations to intensify moods in lm music. The aim of this work is to enrich the musical experience of lm audiences and might also have implication on the hearing-impaired, providing them with a new enhanced emotional experience while watching a movie. Although there has been previous work into music displays of a visual and haptic nature, and on the importance of music in film, there is no documented research on musical enhancement experience in film entertainment. This work focuses on the mood conveyed by lm music in order to understand what role it plays in creating the film experience, and also explores the possibility of enhancing those feelings through haptic sensations. Drawing on HCI and interaction design principles, the design of a piece of haptic wearable technology is proposed and used as the tool for user studies. This research contributes to the fields of: HCI, interaction design, user experience design, multimodal interaction, creative technology, wearable technology, haptics, entertainment technology and lm music. This work also provides a set of design suggestions to aid future research and designers of haptic sensations for media enhancement. Proposed guidelines are based on a number of empirical findings that describe and explain aspects of audience emotional response to haptics, providing some first evidence that there is a correlation between vibrotactile stimuli (such as frequency and intensity) and perceived feelings.EPSRC Doctoral Training Centre in Digital Music and Media for the Creative Economy [EP/G03723X/1]

Operationalizing mild cognitive impairment criteria in small vessel disease: The VMCI-Tuscany Study

Introduction Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) prodromic of vascular dementia is expected to have a multidomain profile. Methods In a sample of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) patients, we assessed MCI subtypes distributions according to different operationalization of Winblad criteria and compared the neuroimaging features of single versus multidomain MCI. We applied three MCI diagnostic scenarios in which the cutoffs for objective impairment and the number of considered neuropsychological tests varied. Results Passing from a liberal to more conservative diagnostic scenarios, of 153 patients, 5% were no longer classified as MCI, amnestic multidomain frequency decreased, and nonamnestic single domain increased. Considering neuroimaging features, severe medial temporal lobe atrophy was more frequent in multidomain compared with single domain. Discussion Operationalizing MCI criteria changes the relative frequency of MCI subtypes. Nonamnestic single domain MCI may be a previously nonrecognized type of MCI associated with SVD

How Does It Feel Like? An Exploratory Study of a Prototype System to Convey Emotion through Haptic Wearable Devices

    No full text
This paper reports on the design and implementation of a portable, hands-free, wearable haptic device that maps the emotions evoked by the music in a movie into vibrations, with the aim that hearing-impaired audience can get a sense of the emotional content carried by the music in specific movie scenes, and therefore feel (hear) the music through the sense of touch. A study of the use of the technology is reported which found that high arousal and high valence were reliably conveyed through haptic patterns with high intensity and high frequency, whereas haptic patterns with low intensity and low frequency conveyed low arousal and low valence

Tolerance toward migrants among Italian adolescents and young adults: The role of civic and political participation

This paper aims at clarifying the relationship between being involved in different forms of participation and tolerance toward migrants in young people. Almost 3000 participants from two European-funded research projects – FP7 PIDOP and H2020 CATCH-EyoU – answered a questionnaire that measured socio-demographics variables, the dimension of fairness in school climate, different forms of civic and political participation, and tolerance toward migrants and refugees. The results are consistent between the two studies, showing that civic participation demonstrated a major positive effect on tolerance. Being older, female, born in a foreign country, having more educated parents, and perceiving fairness at school, were also conditions, which sustained the development of tolerance
